Dryer Exhaust Fans

Fan and control selection for commercial dryers

An exhaust fan ventilates dryer exhaust in concert with the dryer’s own airflow output, reducing the backpressure the dryer feels and ensuring smooth ventilation to atmosphere. Dryer exhaust fans must meet strict criteria under the International Mechanical Code to reduce fire hazard.

When is a fan necessary? When a dryer is ducted beyond the manufacturer’s specified allowance — as a rule of thumb, duct runs over 30 ft, or backpressure greater than 0.5″ W.C. A dryer will have diminished performance above 0.5″ W.C. and may be inoperable over 1″ W.C.

Select a control

CCS was the first company to provide dryer-specific exhaust fan systems.

Technical Layout Of An EQ Fan Control Box With Lint Lasso And QEI Booster Fan On A Common Dryer Duct

EQ

Automatic multi-speed VFD control panel for dryers on a common duct. Turns the fan on only when high pressure is detected and modulates speed to balance airflow. UL compliant.

EQX Stand-alone VFD Fan Control System With EQX-B2 Pressure Monitor

EQX

Stand-alone VFD drive system. Same automatic operation as the EQ, supplied as a drive rather than a full panel. Pre-programmed and ready for in-field startup.

FC-GSX

Three-phase controller for individually ducted dryers and ironers. Speed adjusted manually on the control. Includes disconnect and UL approved housing.

FC-HOA

Single-phase controller for individually ducted dryers. Turns the fan on with the dryer and runs it at 100% speed.

LB-2XL

Recommended fan for 4″ ducted dryers. Up to 230 CFM, belt drive, 120V motor, handles dirty airflow. Automatic fan controller included.

Balancing the fan

  • Single dryer projects can use a single-speed fan at the correct strength
  • Simple projects (1–2 dryers) can use a single-speed fan balanced mechanically with weighted dampers
  • Complex projects require a VFD drive to adjust fan strength automatically, depending on dryer output

If the fan is too strong it pulls heat from the dryer; too weak and backpressure remains excessive. Excessive backpressure increases dry times, wear and utilities consumption, and shortens dryer lifespan.

Lint protection

A lint trap is typically used to protect the exhaust fan from lint debris and prevent accumulation in the duct. CCS recommends the Lint Lasso for projects up to 4,000 CFM, and the DLF-500 for projects from 4,000 to 40,000 CFM. All fan projects are custom built to order — contact CCS on 800-826-1245.
